Lab with Lupus

Jim said Dio, his 10 year old labrador, had a bloody nose. He thought he cut it while hunting. His nasal planum (the flat hairless pigmented portion of the nose) had erosions, ulcers, crusts, and discoloration. We diagnosed discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). DLE is similar to systemic lupus (SLE) without involvement of other body organs. Exposure to sunlight exacerbates the skin lesions. We treated Dio with sunscreen, Vitamin E, and medication for his immune system. A shiny smooth nose returned.
